Insomnia: There a re few other Rx medications you can ask your doctor about such as Lunesta or Belsomra. Over the counter Tylenol (acetaminophen) PM often helps people sleep. Benadryl is often Rx'd by some docs at 50mg nightly to help with sleep as well. Ask you doctor for other alternatives since they are telling you to take the ambien as needed sporadically only. They should have continuity of care and know.

See a sleep doctor: For severe daily insomnia, you need to get to the root of it with a sleep specialist. This will take time and patience. You have to get away from the idea that you need to take something every night. This will just cause a never-ending reliance on pills. Lifestyle changes are the key: avoid alcohol, keep a regular sleep/wake schedule, no caffeine or tobacco, exercise regularly, maybe try hypnosis?
