Should not: Antibiotics are over-prescribed. They are totally ineffective against viral infections and have significant negative side-effects. They are given by some doctors because patients insist upon receiving one, because they are unsure what the diagnosis is, or because they may not understand the negative aspects of this behavior. This is happening less and less.

...: Antibiotics should not be given for viral infections since they are used to treat bacteria and do not treat viruses. Some viruses have treatments (hiv, hepatitis, flu, shingles). Other viruses have vaccines to prevent infection (flu, measles, etc). For viruses like the common cold, the illness is treated symptomatically.
