A member asked:

17 tear old daughter with normal thyroid function with ultrasound showing 5-mm hypoechoic nodule what should next step be and how worried should i b?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Don't worry: Thyroid nodules are very common, especially in females. There are many reasons they develop and the vast majority are benign. Usually the next step for a tiny nodule is to follow it with ultrasound and see how it behaves. If it gets bigger, a sample can be taken with a small needle to be sure that it is not malignant (cancerous).
