Depends: Some stitches come out on their own by dissolving. Others must be removed. So it depends on the type you have. If they are the dissolvable type, they will usually start coming out after 5-7 days but can persist much longer, two weeks or more. Those that must be removed should be removed 7-14 days after placement, depending on the size of the wound and rate of healing. That is your dr's call.

It depends.: Some sutures (plain gut) dissolve in 3 or 4 days; some sutures (chromic gut) last a week or 10 days before they dissolve, and some sutures (silk) don't dissolve at all and have to be removed by your surgeon. Ask your surgeon what kind of sutures were used.
