Depends: Scaling, root planing & gingival curettage are effective non surgical therapies in some cases. Lasers, and conventional periodontal flap surgery are also very effective methods in treating periodontal disease. The methods used are tailored to your specific periodontal problem. One method is not the best for all periodontal problems. Seek a clinical diagnosis from a trusted periodontist.

Deep cleaning: If lucky and not too advanced, a deep cleaning may be used to treat the abcess, in addition local antibiotics may be used to help heal the periodontal pocket. If none of this works, you may need to get more aggressive with periodontal surgery.

Debridement: Debridement and drainage, followed by antibiotics, probably is the best way to treat gum abscess.
