That depends: If your gums were healthy to start with and you miss brushing for 2-3 days, then yes they should heal with a return to good brushing. If it has been longer then this and/or your gums were already inflamed you may need a professional cleaning to give them a fresh start and allow them to heal. If you have active periodontal disease you definately need a professional evaluation and treatment.

Possibly: If you do not have hardened deposits on your teeth, then removing the soft plaque with brushing and maintaining your teeth with effective brushing should solve your problem. If you have calculus formation, then you need to see a dentist.

Cause and extent of: Your question is somewhat confusing as you do not state whether or not your gums are healthy now and whether you plan on not brushing for awhile or haven't been doing it recently. With minor inflammation and resumed brushing and flossing, it should snap back to health. Interestingly enough, if your gums are bleeding and inflamed, if you avoid keeping them clean, things will worsen.
