Usually Yes: Of course it depends on the amount of swelling and your medical condition. Sometime a drain is placed( an i & d procedure) to allow reduction of the infection prior to extraction along with antibiotics.

Yes: Yes, the swelling is being caused by the infected tooth. Sometimes antibiotics are used first. Best person to treat a problem like this is an oral surgeon.
