No: An md is a medical doctor who deals with the whole body and any tests used for diagnoses. A dmd or dds are essentially the same. An oral surgeon can order any imaging that would lead to a diagnosis in his or her area of expertise (head and neck). Many oral surgeons graduating today earn double degrees of dmd/dds and md, they are very well trained.

Not really: As long as it pertains to the mouth a licensed dentist can order anything that an oral surgeon can. The difference may be in the interpretation of the x-ray which is not a test.

No: All licensed oral surgeons, regardless of degree type, can order the same tests when it relates to head, neck and teeth. Many oral surgeons are dual trained as md/dmd or md/dds. This added background may give them a different perspective when interpreting test results and clinical exams.

Degrees: General Medicine equivalent degrees are MD/DO. General Dental equivalent degrees are DDS/DMD. Just like completing a residency in medicine such as General Surgery/OBGyn/Proctology/etc, Dentists may take residency training in Oral Surgery/Orthodontics/Endodontics/etc. All practitioners can order/perform xRay images/treatments/tests pertinent to their field of knowledge and expertise.
