Somewhat important: It is important to have reasonable diabetic control before and after cataract surgery. Many anesthetists will not give sedation during surgery if the blood sugar is above a certain level, which may depend on the individual doctor. The blood sugar control does not have to be perfect, however, to have a successful surgical result. The eyes should be examined before and after surgery for retinopathy.

Not that important: Optimally, good blood sugar control would be ideal but poor control will not likely cause any problem.

Less infection risk: Keeping your blood sugar levels is important during the per and postoperative period. Elevated blood sugars can prolonged tissue healing time and increase the risk of a post operative infection.
