Your choice: The decision to have cataract surgery is a personal one. It is done when your vision has diminished to the point that you are uncomfortable. There is no clear cut medical dividing line. You can have the one eye done and wait as long as YOU want for the second. It is not the choice of the surgeon and he will be happy to do it whenever you decide.

Timing Cataract Surg: Timing between eyes for cataract surgery is dependent on: pt's risk factors, vision, symptoms, & outcome of 1st eye, MD. Studies show sequential surgery (even at same time, though not allowed in US yet) saves pt down time, money, stress. If 1st surgery went well, though there are no guarantees, most eye MDs generally recommend CE 2nd eye soon (depending on refraction of 1st eye) & pt's preference.
