Yes: Yes it can. It can also last quite a long time. Standard treatment is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Indocin, (indomethacin) one of the older medications, seems to work well. Use with caution since it is a little hard on the stomach.

See an osteopathic: Doctor or a physical therapist. Slipped rib syndrome is also a common cause of pain. The underlying problem most often is mechanical. Inflammation is secondary and treating inflammation with anti-inflammatories does not address the cause. Gentle manual therapy may be all you need.
