Overuse: Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage between the sternum and ribs. It is common although the cause is unknown and typically resolves spontaneously. More common causes of chest pain in athletes are stress fractures of the ribs or sternum and intercostal muscle injury due to impact injury and overuse. A trial of decreased training/sport may help but persistent pain should be evaluated
