Prevent infections: Patients with certain heart conditions and prosthetic joints are given premedication to help prevent infections in those areas. The meds are very very inexpensive in relation to the costs and/or consequences of treating an infection in your heart or prosthetic joint.

To prevent infection: Premedication is usually recommended for patients at risk for infection. Bacteria from the mouth can spread through the bloodstream during some invasive dental procedures. This usually only affects people at risk for these infections including some cardiac patients, people with joint replacements, people with certain indwelling catheters and immunocompromised patients. Discuss the need with your d.
