Salt water gargle: Gargling with salt water may help reduce the swelling by pulling fluid out of the tonsils. That being said, tonsillitis is usually secondary to an infection, and if it gets really bad, it can be life-threatening - i would advise going to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Depends: It of course depends why they are inflamed. Either viral or bacterial infection can cause tonsils to swell and only evaluation by a physician would help that. Untreated bacterial infections can have serious complications. If you have fever, chills or continued/ worsening pain don't delay and get seen!
