At 50 i still get tonsillitis several times a year and have from early childhood. my tonsils are permanently enlarged too. doctor won't remove them.

Consult time: If this is true you can always shop around until you find a doc who will. Understand that they often have no choice today. If you plan to have your insurance cover the procedure (start to finish) they will often not approve any elective surgery (not emergency) until you meet specific guidelines. If you are ready to pay out of pocket you can get it done. It may not stop the throat infections.

Tondillectomy: Hello, reasons for tonsillectomy are recurring infections, obstruction causing sleep troubles or swallowing problems, heart failure, abscess formation, asymmetrical size and cancer suspicion. You may qualify with sleep issues due to enlarged size and recurring infections. Sometimes the bacteria which causes the infections “live” within the tonsils and removal is indicated.
