800mg 3x a day: Ibuprofen (advil (ibuprofen) or motrin) is dosed basically as milligrams per pound. Most adults can take advantage of the maximum effect by taking 800mg breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Watch out for stomach upset, however. Also, limit the time you take this medication -- high doses for prolonged time may contribute to kidney damage (same precaution for all anti-inflammatory drugs).

800mg: The maximum dose i recommend is 800mg every 8 hours. I suggest you see your dentist as soon as possible to take care of the situation.

Be careful: Many drugs have side effects that are more likely the longer you take the drug for. Ibuprofen is not generally meant for long term use. Get the cause of the toothache taken care of.

Severe toothache: Without knowing your med history or what other meds you might be taking, my advice would be to follow the directions on the bottle and to call a local dentist for an appointment ASAP. Pain will only get worse without treatment.
