Specializes in Child Psychiatry

Yes: All psychiatrists have some experience with children. However, child & adolescent psychiatrists have additional training specifically and exclusively in treating childhood problems. And, there are programs devoted to childhood trauma at an early age, such as the harris center at lsu.

You need to ask: There are specific programs and interventions for abused children that vary by age of the child and type of approach. Both psychologists and child and adolescent psychiatrists can have that type of training, but many do not. Those seeking help should ask what training a person has had and what kind of approach they plan to use--then look it up in terms of proof it can help.
