Firstly, : Firstly, there is no reason to be scared if you have a cavity... You are not falling apart. Forget about diagnosing this by yourself with a needle. You are correct: it is either a stain, or a cavity. A dentist, examining your tooth physically, can tell you for sure. Staining is caused by bacteria that gets caught in the pits and fissures of your teeth, or from the actual coloring of the food you eat. Make an appointment, get an exam for all of your teeth, and make sure that you don't have any other problems that you cannot see.

Agree : Agree that there is nothing to be scared about from your description. If you have never had decay the chances are that it is a stain or incipient (beginning) decay. Dental techniques and materials have come a long way and it is even now possible to have certain types of decay treated without the need for anesthesia. If you have been receiving bi-annual dental exams and cleanings then it is probably not a big problem. Make an appointment with your dentist for an evaluation. Do not attempt performing dental procedures yourself, it can only lead to bigger problems.

Sounds : Sounds like it's time to have a dentist check it out. Although it is probably no big deal, the only way to know what it is for sure is by a professional exam and possibly an x-ray.
