Scientific : Scientific studies done to date show that carbamide peroxide, the whitening agent, has not long term negative effects on your teeth or gums. However, you cannot rule out short term sensativity or gum irritation. How fast the procedure whitens has to do with the strength of the whitening agents. There seems to be a contention between the chemical strength and sensativity. Mostly the sensativity and irritation is temporary.

Not : Not necessarily. The whitening agent is safe, and the sensitivity comes for the drying out of your teeth. Ther is no reason why you can't have this done several times over a period of years. There would be no advantage to doing the professional whitening only one time, and then doing other whitening techniques since they may use the same materials in both instances.

Yes, but...: Laser teeth whitening can be done safely many times to maintain the results, but most of my patients, who do laser whitening, also get a set of custom bleaching trays and use them for maintenance.
