Yes: Gum disease has been linked to preterm birth, and should ideally be treated before pregnancy. It is safe to get teeth cleaned during pregnancy. Dental problems, such as cavities and abscessed teeth should be handled on an individual basis-- your OB and dentist can work together to plan the best treatment for your particular situation.

Always check : My protocol is to check with the md who is caring for the patient during their pregnancy. Ideally a simple cleaning during the 2nd trimester and a visual check with no x-rays.

Yes it is safe: As long as there are no complications during the pregnancy you will be fine. Most dentist will perform dental work in the 3rd trimester or preferably after birth. However, if you need to have a dental procedure and a numbing shot is required for the procedure, make sure the dentist uses no Epinephrine in the shot for your mouth. Congratulations on your miracle. Good luck with the pregnancy.
