Probably stuck: It takes a while to be convinced that blood pressure medicines are necessary. If diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes aren't enough, then we resort to medicines. If, however, the patient can lose 80 pounds, stop alcohol/caffeine/salt/stress/etc., then it is conceivable that blood pressure medicine could be stopped. Even with that, some people just make high blood pressure anyway...

BP med duration: If one's hypertension (hbp) is "essential" hypertension it is quite likely that one will need lifelong therapy if no changes are made in that person's life style. Some people can lose their hbp with weight loss and/or cessation of smoking. If the hbp is secondary, treatment of the cause of it can resolve the cause of hbp. A physician needs to be seen to answer your question.
