Bruising: This can happen on occasion from a variety of factors such as items the tooth is rinsed with if they get beyond the root tip (rare), infection either active at the time of the root canal or what is called a phoenix abscess (1-5%) or blood thinners the patient may be on (rare but not uncommon). If there is swelling with the bruising and it is warm and hard you should go back for observation.

Rare: Post treatment complications are rare after dental treatment, but, they do happen. Bruising is no exception, your dentist is in the best position to advise you since he is already familiar with the protocol that was followed during your procedure.

Uncommon: Bruising is uncommon as a direct result of root canal therapy. The most common explanation is that the bruising or more likely the hematoma, was a result of the local anesthetic injection. Blood thinners in general may exacerbate the incident.

Uncommon: After a normal root canal bruising can occur if you get swelling from the root end abscess and this then can bruise in some people. This does not happen often. It is more common if your endodontist performs a surgical procedure where he incises the gum for drainage or removal of the abscess.

Incomplete treatment: The most common cause of root canal failure is missed canals or incomplete cleaning shaping and sealing of the canals in the tooth. If a root canal fails, do not assume the tooth has to be extracted. See an endodontist who uses a microscope. They can often times retreat the root canal effectively! there are other causes that are less common, determined by an endodontist!

Rare: But possible. Bruising indicates a burst blood vessel.

Not normally: Bruising is an unlikely outcome from rct. It may however result from extrusion of a solution used to clean the canal. This solution can cause pain, aggressive swelling and bruising. If this is describing your condition i suggest you return to your dds for observation. If not it is most likely a hematoma secondary to the local injection. Either way you should call your dds and advise them.

Injection: Not often, but sometimes when the injection of the anesthetic is placed, the injection site may have a vein that is struck and there may be some bleeding into the tissues...Hematoma. Usually not serious and will go away, but i would notify the dentist.

Root Canal: This can happen. Is the tooth feeling better? Many times the bruising is secondary to the injection of anesthetic.
