High for some: That would depend on the condition of a person's teeth and the frequency of dental exams and treatment. Those who do not see a dentist regularly and have untreated cavities are at high risk for a dental infection that requires a root canal.

Minimal to none: The benefits outweigh the risks tremendously. The risk that it may not work depends on the severity of the infection, pathology associated with the infection and vitality of the tooth at the time the procedure was intiated. The procedure itself is not the cause of discomfort. It is the individual's response to the infection that causes symptoms of discomfort.
