Some yes, some no: Hernia=an organ or part of an organ protruding beyond/outside of its cavity through a defect in the wall. You cannot see hiatal hernia (stomach up in lung area) without imaging or during surgery. Large surgical hernias can be seen/felt all the time. Smaller reducible umbilical/inguinal hernias often can be seen/felt better in upright position etc.. If you have concern, consult doc. Good luck.

No bulge, No hernia: Abdominal wall hernias are evident as bulges that protrude with exertion. They can be subtle (to patient & doctor, both) and can be more obvious some days more than others. My philosophy is that if i can't find a hernia, i shouldn't recommend surgery no matter what description i hear or ct findings--if its there, it will make itself evident in time.

No: A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall through which abdominal organs can protrude, and you may see a lump under the skin. If there is only a small amount of fat in the hernia, or you are obese, you may not see the lump.
