A member asked:

Why can you only see a hernia on a scan when there is a bulge under the skin? do they diagnose them based solely on symptoms?

Exam is key: Usually, the best method to diagnose a hernia is by physical examination. Occasionally, depending on factors such as the size of the hernia, and obesity, it can require some sort of imaging study to make the diagnosis. Sometimes it's more difficult to detect groin hernias in women compared to men on examination. Hope this helps!
