Won't: For first thing, not all TMJ splints are successful at recapturing the disc. The oral orthotic is not a cure all for the problem. You may also need physical therapy and other exercises that can be provided by a TMJ specialist and/or a physical therapist. If the disc is ruptured and the condyle is deformed (degeneration, ) you will normally need a lot more than a splint to get results.

It may not: You have a difficult condition. Sometimes the disc does not recapture well, especially if the joint is deformed. A secondary goal can be to get your joint where it has improved function and some stability. You could be near the point where you don't improve any more. (maximum medical improvement). Keep the lines of communication open with your doctor.

Symptoms dictate: It is controversial that discs can be recaptured if displaced for a long period. Splints can promote balancing an imbalanced TMJ system and often do relieve symptoms. A recently displaced disc may recapture. One can also function with a displaced disc however, pain or altered function usually indicates need for treatment.

Likely not...: Successful attempts at recapturing a disc are unlikely in terms of long-standing displacement. If the disc is deformed and perforated, the likelihood is less. With your splint, it is also allowing the body to heal itself, remodel, and restabilize the system.

Splint: You have to be careful with these splints. They permanently change your bite and might need surgery to correct it. There might be relief or recapturing at the beginning stages but the disc goes anteriorly again.

Not likely: Not likely disk will be recaptured if disk is perforated. Splint still might help with symptoms however. After 2 scopes, you may need open TMJ surgery.
