Sometimes: When they are large it should be quite easy unless there was a lot of debris that was not removed first. Small ones can be very difficult to find in some areas even with xrays, but large ones should be pretty easy to find with the aid of xrays. Sometimes they are larger than they appears as well.

Follow up for sure: A thorough exam and high quality radiographs (x-rays) should allow for the discovery of most dental cavities, especially ones that are noticeable to the patient or parent. It is possible in a nine year old that the tooth is one that will be coming out soon and treatment was deferred. Just to be sure, i would follow up and make sure it is not a cavity that requires treatment.
