It is excessive: For the prevention of neural tube (and maybe other birth) defects, 400 micrograms of Folic Acid is recommended. For individuals with a history of having an affected child, we often recommend 4milligrams (10x the usual dose.) the dose you are taking is more than recommended, but will likely not be harmful, since it is water soluble and the excess will likely be excreted.
