Definitely: Wearing braces without professional supervision can result in tooth damage, gum and bone loss that can lead to tooth loss, and even more serious problems if portions of the appliances become broken off and are swallowed or aspirated. This is a serious matter and should be taken as such. Call your orthodontist immediately.

Depends: Fixed braces on teeth require periodic adjustment and evaluation. Active braces can cause unwanted tooth movement if not monitored regularly. Leaving braces on teeth for extended periords of time and not having regular dental visits and having poor dental hygiene and eating sugary foods/drinking carbonated beverages could cause tooth damage as well. Get back to your orthodontist asap.
