Cataracts: Cataracts can progress (advance) at different rates. In some patients, we can see major changes in the order of months. In other patients, we may not see changes for years. So - there is no specific time that can be said.

Differs: Every one is different. The cataracts usually progress slowly and average age for surgery is 67-70 years old. Some need it sooner and some later. Impossible to predict when one will need surgery. It is based on how much the cataracts affect your activities of daily living.
