How long can i go without wearing dental retainer after getting off braces?

You really should: Wear your retainer as prescribed by your orthodontist. Teeth drift rather rapidly and all the time, discomfort and expense that you invested was then wasted. Do yourself a favor - wear your retainers.

Don't: You spent a lot of money and time in braces. Your teeth can start moving over night, right after the braces come off. If you wait till you notice a tooth has moved the retainer may not fit.

Almost never: To hold the orthodontic correction, retainers should be a lifetime active pursuit, otherwise the relapse will be unpleasant. Having said that, it may be appropriate to experiment with wearing every other or third day after the bone is set. You will know what you can "get away with" by feeling how tight retainers are when you put them back in. Everyone is different an relapse may be less of a prob.

Wear your retainer: Your retainer was given to you by your orthodontist to preserve your result and minimize changes with time. Nightly wear is a good idea to maintain your smile and bite. Anything that gets used each and every day needs maintenance, cars, houses, your body. Your teeth are no exception. Retainers are like "anti-aging cream" for your teeth.

Not long: Only wear retainers on teeth that you want to retain (keep straight)! in other words, follow the prescribed directions of your orthodontist for wearing the retainers to avoid disappointment and adverse changes. You invested too much to permit things to slip.

Not smart: How long do you want your teeth to stay straight. Retainers must be worn as directed by your orthodontist if you want them to stay straight. If you don't stabilize them properly when braces removed they will always be a problem. Not wearing them is like playing russian roulette.
