Think ahead: As an adult...We are wimps when it comes to pain from adjustments of our braces. Kids don't seem to mind most of the time, but we as adults focus on them. I remember i was in pain after an adjustment (i was 50) and when i complained..I got no sympathy from my kids who already had em. So...Plan ahead and take a motrin, Aspirin or tylenol (acetaminophen) about an hour before your appointment.

Pain after Braces: I would suggest a mild analgesic such Acetaminophen (tylenol). This will help relieve some of the discomfort. I would also suggest a soft food diet until your discomfort becomes less.

Time and...: Generally a major orthodontic adjustment will cause discomfort for about 72 hours, then will quickly dissipate. Ibuprofen is good for short term relief, better than tylenol (acetaminophen) which does not act as an ant-inflammatory med. New copper nickel titanium wires are temperature sensitive, so with a new wire change, sip ice water which will make the wire go "limp" and lessen the pain.

Tincture of time: Takes some time to get used to braces, days for kids, weeks for adults. In the meantime advil (ibuprofen)?Motrin?Ibuprofen (better than tylenol) every 4 hrs w water or food. 1tsp salt in 8oz warm water 4x/day, swish & spit out. Cover "stickers" w orthodontic wax. Dab orabase-b onto sore spots w q tip. Keep teeth spotlessly clean. Eat soft high protein diet. Good luck.
