A female asked:

When your teeth are straight do you get your braces off?

Essentially: The orthodontist will assure your teeth are straight and properly aligned for biting, chewing etc. Once all appropriate alignment is obtained, including straightness, then your braces can come off. Ask your dr. When yours will be ready to come off. Best wishes.

Straight: Straight is a relative term. Not only do the crowns of the teeth have to be straight, but so do the roots under the gums. Your teeth and jaws must align with each other properly and function optimally. Once braces come off you will need retainers. I assume you're seeing anorthodontic specialist. Talk to specialist about goals, timing, and what's still needed to complete your treatment.

Less than ideal: If you completed orthodontic treatment ; are not satisfied with your result you should start by discussing this with the orthodontist who treated you. We have no way of evaluating the quality of care, the extent of your cooperation, and either the beginning or final occlusion attained. If unhappy with the dentist or explanation after that, consult with another orthodontist who is highly regarded.

Can you get braces if your teeth are straight but you have an overbite?

Yes, absolutely: An overbite (or underbite) can throw your bite off just enough to still do some damage to the teeth. The way your upper jaw and lower jaw come together may be off, regardless if your teeth are straight or crooked. Braces will help with the alignment of your bite. Get an orthodontic consultation to be sure. And remember age is not an issue!

How can you get straight teeth without the use of braces?

All depends: There are cosmetic dentistry alternatives to orthodontic treatment to achieve a straight looking smile. However, without tooth movement, the teeth remain where they are and "additions" to existing tooth structure are used to make them appear straight, but the unerlying natural tooth structure is still crooked.
