Exercise: See a physical therapist who can show you exercises to help reduce low back pain. Try moist heat before exercising. Swimming can be a great exercise for people with low back pain as well. Acupuncture can be quite effective in managing low back pain. Discuss these options with your doctor.

Degeneration: Strictly speaking, arthritis refers to pain/inflammation in joints. In reference to the spine, most doctors are simply referring to degeneration, or aging changes, when applying a diagnosis of arthritis. In general terms, treatment options include physical therapy, increased activity, regular exercise, weight loss, improved diet. Beyond that, medications and injections are also options.
