Help baby settle : From a distance. I find it helpful to feed infants as they awaken, do body maintenance after & they play with them until they tire before putting them in a crib to settle. Reading to them from a distance can help them settle, like it does you if you sit in a sermon that lasts too long. Direct contact to rock or soothe promotes dependence & prevents longer night sleep. You can start this at birth.

Crying to sleep: I personally think that letting a child cry him/herself to sleep is a very personal decision. Having said that helping your child to develop self soothing techniques to allow him to learn how to put himself to sleep is essential (or he'll need you till he's 12). If you decide to let him cry, decide in advance how long you will let him cry.
