Separation anxiety: Kids will go thru a stage where separation is difficult. After 6-9mo they realize how well u provide for their needs, yet their brain doesn't understand u can leave and return, by 18-24mo most begin to understand.You can soften your night ritual by reading to baby from a few ft away, then say nitenite and leave. Its ok if he screams(a bunch). You can return & check but avoid picking him up.

Yes: Kids are smart and no how to get what they want. I would leave him alone and he will settle down within few days that his tantrums are not working. I know it is hard to do but there is no other way.
