What's the difference between tummy tuck(abdominoplasty) and liposuction?

17 doctors weighed in across 10 answers

Big difference : A tummy tuck removes the excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, and pulls the skin from the upper abdomen down to tighten it up. Liposuction removes the fat from under the skin with a sharp edged suction device placed through a small incision or series of small incisions, and does not remove any skin.

Tuck -vs- Lipo: The safest procedure for fat removal is a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise. When diet and exercise are not enough; then liposuction is helpful for problem fat areas. Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to remove lax skin of the lower abdomen, tighten abdominal wall muscles of the abdomen and contour the waist line. Abdominoplasty can be improved with addition of liposuction.

Huge....: Liposuction is a simple operation to remove fat. It doesn't affect much else. Tummy tuck surgery is larger scale surgery to tighten the abdominal wall, and remove skin and fat. It tightens at the expense of a longer operation leaving a longer scar with a longer period of recuperation. http://www.cosmeticsurgerytruth.com/blog/?p=45.

Tummy Tuck: Tummy tuck and liposuction are distinctly different procedures. Liposuction removes fat between the skin and muscle, while a tummy tuck removes skin and tightens the muscle. Seek consultation with a surgeon certified by the american board of plastic surgery.

Comprehensive v fat: Whereas the abdominoplasty treats all components of the abdominal wall (skin, fat and muscle), liposuction only removes fat and does not address loose skin or separated muscles.

Lipo vs. Tuck: Tummy tuck and liposuction are two different procedures with different indications. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat, and tightens the abdominal muscles. Liposuction removes only fat. Both can give excellent results for propoperly selected patients.

4 Different patients: If you have great, elastic skin - but a little abdominal fat - then lipo is perfect for you. If you have loose skin, stretch marks and muscle separation ("diastasis"), then you need a tummy tuck. One operation doesn't replace the other.

Very Different.: Although both operations involve abdominal wall contouring, they are very different in nature, indications, and recovery. Liposuction removes adipose tissue from the subcutaneous layer of the abdomen; tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and re approximates abdominal wall muscles as well. Best to seek consultation with board certified plastic surgeons for good advice.

Lipo vs Tuck: The main diference between liposuction and a tummy tuck, is that a tummy tuck removes excess skin, stretch marks, and tightens the muscles, as liposuction does not.

Quite a bit.: An abdominoplasty that i perform involves three main things- 1. Skin removal and tightening 2. Muscle tightening 3. Liposuction of flanks for the abdominal region, the typical candidate for liposuction only is less than 40 years, has had no pregnancies and no stretch marks. However these have to be catered to the patient and i suggest a consultation with a plastic surgeon.
