Yes it can: Under normal circumstances, your teeth should be able to tolerate this without chipping. However, over time, the edges of the front teeth can get thinner from teeth grinding. These thinner edges are much weaker and are more susceptible to cracking or chipping from from biting fingernails, biting down on a fork, etc.

Absolutely: I have had patients chip front teeth when biting a piece of thread. If you can imagine, the total biting force that you can place on a very tiny object can approach many hundreds of pounds per square inch. The tinier the object , the greater the force. Suggestion, use clippers for you fingernails and leave teeth for healthy food and that gorgeous smile! your sweetheart will appreciate it.
