Nerve injury: Seems like median nerve distribution area is numb. Make sure, x ray is done to prove ' no fracture'. Once that is ruled out, see a neurologist or chiropractor.

Nerve impinged: After the fall it is possible your father broke or sprained his wrist. The nerves in the hand are fairly close to the bones and can be pressed on, or impinged, by swelling or a fracture. He should go by an urgent care center to ensure that there is no treatable fracture. If just swelling the nerve will recover on its own. Nsaids might help if your father can take them.
