Not black & white: This is an intuitive response. Ultimately you are the best judge. Comforting can help. Letting him cry it out can help. Just make peace with yourself about whatever you do. That will set the best example for your son when he has his own children.

Yes & no: I think it's ok for a kid to "cry it out" as long as you have run thru the list of things you can fix. If fed within the past 1-2hrs & dry, not too hot or cold & really just over tired it doesn't hurt. If he stops when you pick him up but it's nap time, he needs to learn to self settle. Kids who are rocked to sleep have 400% more sleep problems the first 4yrs.It doesn't hurt them mentally.
