A member asked:

Is it normal to charge a patient a cancelation fee prior to the initial visit and before any policy or procedures have been discussed. ?

Depends: Although not typical, it is not unusual for more and more doctors to charge a cancellation fee or missed appointment fee. Often this is done because the time blocked for your appointment prevented the doctor from seeing other patients. Fees such as these, should be explained in advance on the new patient paperwork or packet. Discuss this with your doctor if you disagree with such a fee.
