Not even close: Tmj is a disorder or problem of the joint of your jaw. When it has problems and need fixing it is not cosmetic at all. As for insurance...If it isn't covered by your dental insurance, then medical insurance may cover it, depending on the treatment.

Depends on policy: I have found that most dental insurances have limitations on procedures treating tmj.For better clarification, i suggest you contact your dental insurance and get the actual language in your contract on what is considered a procedure related to tmj. If you have tmj, I have seen some procedures like phys.Therapy covered by the medical insurance.Your dentist should be able to work with your md on it.

TMJ: Most people make this mistake. The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint (tmj). Probably what you meant is tmd which stands for temporomandibular dysfunction. Tmd is not considered cosmetic but it's difficult to get any insurance to cover the problem because it's too subjective. I recommend pre authorizing any claims with insurance before committing to any treatment so you know what you must pay.

Not cosmetic: Not cosmetic. Coverage depends on state. TMJ is covered by law in California.
