Listen to the doc: No one really knows how to explain whether you'll get a dry socket or not following an extraction but, you can help as much as possible by following the directions. After an extraction don't drink thru a straw, don't smoke, dont drink hot liquids, don't swish or rinse heavily and don't try to brush the area vigorously. Let the site sit as peaceful and long as possible.

Additional notes: Just a few things to add to dr. Sandroff's note. There are some other general factors that make you more or less prone to a dry socket. Sites on the upper jaw are much less likely to end up with dry socket. Typically dry socket occurs with lower molars. Of course, sometimes you can do everything right and you'll still get one. Sometimes you just get the short end of the stick...Sorry :(.
