You are correct that a dry socket is quite painful. Sutures will not totally prevent a dry socket but the chances are diminished when sutures are placed. Best bet is not to gargle or rinse vigorously... those actions have a tendency to dislodge the blood clot, and that results in a dry socket.

Sutures help, but a dry socket refers to bone in the socket not healing right. It can be caused by many things, such as loss of clot (which protects the healing bone), or by a really tough extraction where the surgeon has to put a lot of pressure on the bone to get the roots out and this pressure may interfere with bone healing. Dry sockets can be painful often treated with ointments in the socket
