A member asked:

And is one born with scoliosis or does it develop?

Yes or no: There are several different types of scoliosis. There is a scoliosis that results from congenitlal (born with) deformities within the spine that are the cause of that one type of scoliosis. It is called congenital scoliosis. There are other types that develop and there is some genetic basis for idiopathic scoliosis or what we see in adolescents most commonly.

Develops: Most cases are idiopathic and develop over time. Some cases "congenital" scoliosis are there when you are born but progress to clinical significance as one grows.

Most develops: There a a small percentage of cases of scoliosis, in which a person is born with it; but over 95 percent of cases are developmental. Most begin in the middle and early high school years and worsen during growth.
