Shouldn't be any: Inpatient psychiatric treatment is reserved for those with severe mental illnesses, like if a person feels like killing themselves or in the case of psychosis when one loses touch with reality. If a patient "acts out" on the unit, they are not punished. Rather, the staff does what it takes to keep the patient and everyone else safe. In rare cases, restraints may be used for safety purposes only.

There are different : levels of consequences, not punishments. Time-out is often used for children. Mental health providers know how to set limits, utilize Positive Behavioral Supports & protect themselves from physical aggression without harming a patient. As state mental health commissioners, we reviewed the mandatory written reports of restraint or denial of rights for appropriateness from all inpatient units.
