Depends on location: Psychiatric hospitalization varies depending on where you are hospitalized but typically these are locked units with restrictions on what kind of clothes you can have (no shoe laces, belts, etc). They also limit items you can hurt yourself with. You typically have patients to interact with, as well as nurses, social workers, therapists etc. You can have various different groups, be offered meds.

Psych hospital: You will get help from a team of mental health professionals who will work with you and your family, typically short-term (a week or two) to stabilize your depression and urges to self-harm. You will not be sitting in pj's or on your bed; but wearing your own clothes and encouraged to participate in various activities on the unit. All is designed to help you feel better. It depends: Upon where you are. Generally, you’re hospitalized anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, are evaluated by healthcare providers throughout the day to gauge your improvement, are encouraged to participate in groups and other activities to assist in developing coping strategies, and you are kept safe from self-harm. Good luck!

Important: On an inpatient Psychiatric unit, you will be with other patients struggling with similar issues. Nurses are there around the clock to check on you, talk to you, monitor medical issues. You see a doctor every day to discuss your issues and possibly medication. You would probably go to group therapy. A social worker helps arrange aftercare. If you need it, do it. Discuss with your doctor.
