Hi Pat: An asylum is an old term for a psychiatric hospital and isnt used anymore. A mental hospital is just a generic term for a free- standing psychiatric hospital- could be public or private, and won't have medical wards on the premises, only psychiatric patients. A psychiatric ward is a distinct area for the treatment of psychiatric patients usually in a larger medical hospital
