Subcutaneous fat : Your abdominal wall muscles can be very strong yet not quite visible externally if a thickened layer of subcutaneous fat remains. Weight loss with a goal of burning fat is necessary to uncover your strong abdominal muscles. You may try speaking with a sports nutritionist to expedite the results you want.

Tough question: Lower abdomen's a typical spot for women to gain fat, especially after 40. If you're depending on exercises alone for a visible six-pack, you're out of luck. Lose the fat by reducing calories as well as exercising. Developing abs means exercising all the abdominal muscle i.e. Upper & lower rectus muscles, obliques, transversis abdomenis. Look up target moves. Better to focus on total body health.
