See below: If the joint is acutely hot, red and swollen, ice would be better than heat which may increase inflammation. For joints that are not hot or swollen but are painful and stiff, i find heat works better.

Depends: For acutely injured joints, ice will often help to decrease inflammation. In a chronic inflammatory condition, often heat will soothe the aching joint.
